The Best and Worst Advice I ever got from my Instructors in Nursing School

Nursing school is a challenging and rewarding experience that prepares you for a career in health care. Along the way, you will encounter many instructors who will offer you advice on how to succeed in your studies and in your profession. Some of this advice will be helpful and inspiring, while some of it will be misguided and discouraging. In this blog post.

I will share the best and worst advice I ever got from my instructors in nursing school, and how I used it to grow as a student and as a nurse.

The best advice I ever got from an instructor was to always ask questions. This instructor was my mentor during my clinical rotation, and she taught me that curiosity is a key skill for nurses. She encouraged me to ask questions whenever I was unsure about something, whether it was a procedure, a medication, a diagnosis, or a patient’s condition. She also taught me how to ask questions respectfully and effectively, by being clear, concise, and polite. She said that asking questions shows that you are eager to learn and that you care about providing quality care. She also said that asking questions can prevent errors and save lives. By following her advice, I learned a lot from my clinical experiences and gained confidence in my abilities.

The worst advice I ever got from an instructor was to toughen up. This instructor was my lecturer for a course on ethics and professionalism, and he had a very harsh and cynical view of nursing. He often made negative comments about patients, colleagues, and the health care system. He told us that nursing is a stressful and thankless job, and that we should not expect any recognition or appreciation for our work. He said that we should toughen up and not let our emotions get in the way of our duties. He said that compassion and empathy are weaknesses that will only make us burn out faster. By listening to his advice, I felt demoralized and disillusioned about nursing.

I decided to ignore his advice and instead focus on the positive aspects of nursing. I realized that nursing is not only a job, but also a calling and a passion. I realized that compassion and empathy are strengths that enable me to connect with my patients and provide holistic care. I realized that nursing is a rewarding and meaningful profession that makes a difference in people’s lives. I decided to toughen up in a different way: by being resilient, optimistic, and proactive.

These are the best and worst advice I ever got from my instructors in nursing school. They both had an impact on my education and my career, but in opposite ways. The best advice helped me to improve my skills and knowledge, while the worst advice tried to undermine my values and motivation. The best advice inspired me to be a lifelong learner, while the worst advice discouraged me from being a compassionate caregiver. The best advice made me love nursing more, while the worst advice made me question why I chose nursing in the first place.

I hope that by sharing this advice, I can help other nursing students to navigate their own journey through nursing school. I hope that they can learn from the good advice and ignore the bad advice. I hope that they can find their own voice and their own path in nursing.
